day of dead alter

7th and 8th Spanish students in Mrs. Roberts, Dr. Maguire, and Mrs. Cecchi´s classes enjoyed learning about and celebrating Día de Los Muertos.  Día de Los Muertos is a holiday in Mexico and other Central American countries with its roots in pre-Columbian rituals.  With stories and special foods, participants honor the memory of their departed loved ones.

Students created papel picado (tissue paper designs), calaveras de azúcar (paper sugar skulls), flores de papel (paper flowers - Marigolds) and chose a loved one or a celebrity to honor.  Students helped to decorate the ofrenda.  Items on this altar include: fruits, water, cempasuchil (marigold flowers), candles, and papel picado.  Students made traditional holiday foods and drinks including Mexican hot chocolate and pan de muerto.
